Kylian Mbappé’s injury time goal saw Paris Saint-Germain clinch a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Alexander Isak gave the Magpies the lead in the 24th minute, and he wasn’t pleased with the decision to award the Ligue 1 side a penalty late in the game.
Speaking to Sweden’s TV4, relayed by Fotbollskanalen, the Newcastle star stated he was expecting PSG to find the back of the net in the second half.
“It almost felt like there was going to be a goal. Too bad it happened so late. I think the penalty is very questionable from my side,” he said.
“It is not a bad result. But when you concede a penalty this late, it’s hard to see the positives.”
After the intervention of VAR, referee Szymon Marciniak handed a penalty to the Paris club, which was then converted by Mbappé. Eddie Howe was not happy with this decision.
“I don’t even think it’s close to being a penalty, to be honest. I think it hits the chest first and that’s decisive, I think his hands are in a natural position. I was very surprised,” Howe told TV4, quoted by Fotbollskanalen.
Meanwhile, the Sweden international scored his first ever goal in the Champions League and on achieving this latest feat, Isak explained: “I just tried to get one foot on the ball, I usually hit the target. Great to score the first goal in the Champions League.”
“It means a lot. It’ll surely feel better when it has sunk in, the feelings are not as good when you concede this late in an important match.”
Howe’s side are third in the table, level on points with fourth placed AC Milan, and two behind PSG, who are in second spot.
