Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen has insisted he is not closing the door to a permanent move to Villa Park, or going somewhere else this summer.
The Swedish goalkeeper joined Villa on loan in the January transfer window, cutting short a loan spell with Sheffield United to join Steven Gerrard at the Premier League club.
He’s yet to make a single appearance for the Villans since his arrival, instead spending his time sat on the bench as backup for undisputed number one Emiliano Martinez.
That would suggest his time at the club will only be a short one but reports in Italy contradict that, with suggestions Aston Villa could look to make the loan deal a permanent one.
That, of course, will depend on whether Olsen is keen on the idea, having swapped a lack of minutes at Sheffield United, where he was dropped from November onwards after being a regular earlier in the season, to none with Aston Villa.
He might fancy his chances of securing regular football at a different club, although he has hinted that may not be the case.
“There were many different things that made me choose to leave Sheffield,” he told Fotboll Skanalen.
“The fact that I was able to come to Aston Villa, the fact that Aston Villa took over the loan contract, I saw as a good opportunity.
“I know how good Emiliano Martinez is, but I was thinking a bit further ahead and wanted to find my form again. There was no hesitation when Aston Villa came along. I train very hard there.
Asked about a potential return to Sweden, Olsen said: “We’ll see. I’m not closing doors. But I feel like I have a few years left abroad, but absolutely, those are thoughts that have come. You get older, and then it becomes natural to think about when to come home. After all, you want to end the circle. When it will be, I do not know, but it will not be long.”
The asked if he was hinting about a return to Malmö FF, he said: “It will be Malmö.”
