Werder Bremen have been urged to make a move for goalkeeper Loris Karius when he leaves Liverpool this summer.

Karius is set to leave Anfield on a free transfer this year when his contract comes expires at the end of June, with neither he nor the club seeking a renewal.

A return to Germany seems the most likely option, with him struggling to impress in England since his arrival from Mainz in 2016.

Before that move, he had been well thought of after four years with Mainz, in which he made 96 appearances and kept 32 clean sheets.

That’s something he’s not been close to replicating at Liverpool, where he has not featured since his calamitous performance in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2018.

It seems, though, that his struggles since then have not put off one man, former Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese, who believes the Bundesliga side should be making their move when Karius leaves Liverpool.

“Werder could do without Pavlenka,” he told BILD.

“If he wants to go, let him go. He can definitely be replaced. In the 2nd division, Zetterer would be just right. I would put him in goal immediately. But in the 1. Liga, you would have to do something.

“The club would have to look around for a seasoned keeper.

“For me, Loris Karius would be one for Werder. He’s been on loan, hasn’t played for a long time, but showed what he can do in Mainz. He has quality; otherwise, Liverpool wouldn’t have brought him in.”
