Sporting Gijon midfielder Jonathan Varane has hit back at comparisons to his famous brother, Manchester United’s Raphael Varane.
That’s according to AS, who cover comments from the player today in which he makes his stance very clear about comparisons to his older brother.
The Manchester United defender is pretty much a household name in European football after a career that’s seen him win everything with Real Madrid, where he was a key part during a ten-year spell and won the World Cup with France.
That sort of recognition is not something his younger brother, Jonathan, has earned to date, with a career that’s seen him play for Lens, Rodez AF and now Sporting.
That doesn’t mean comparisons aren’t already being made, though, with predictable comments being made despite the 22-year-old and the Manchester United man being very different players.
It’s already something which appears to be frustrating the younger Varane, who has hit out at such comparisons and insisted he is determined to forge his own path in football.
“I am not my brother because I am Jonathan Varane,” he said.
“(Raphael) has had an impact on my career. When they see Jonathan Varane, they actually see Raphael. I have had to put up with it since I was little.
“M name is Jonathan and I want to be myself, to distance myself from that image of my brother; I am different from him, I like to repeat that.”
