Following a long and stressful saga for Wolverhampton Wanderers and their fans, Bruno Lage’s side managed to finally sign Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP.
There was a time when the player looked like he would sign for Manchester City or someone else playing in Europe, but, ultimately, a move to Molineux was organised, to the great joy of everyone involved.
Sporting got their money and Wolves got the midfielder Lage so dearly wanted, and the player seems rather pleased with his choice, as he explained in an interview with Eleven Sports.
Relayed by O Jogo, the 23-year-old was asked what made him choose Wolverhampton Wanderers over other clubs.
He said: “I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League. My stepfather is English, so I’ve always had a passion for the Premier League since I was a kid. Bruno Lage had been trying to convince me for some time, and with his words, the incentive to come to the Premier League and to play for Wolverhampton, who are building a great team, I made this decision, and I’m very happy.”
There’s no denying the player is joining a strong Portuguese contingent at Wolves, where, excluding staff, there were nine players from Portugal waiting for him.
That will make any move far easier to handle, and Nunes revealed that he did indeed talk with some of the players already at the club before moving.
He added: “In the national team, we talk, but yes, I spoke with José Sá, Rúben Neves. I always wanted to come and my colleagues always said good things to me about here, about the incredible and family orientated atmosphere.”
Nunes was one of the bigger stars at Sporting CP last year, playing 50 games in all competitions, during which he scored four goals and assisted another five.
