Back in January, Manchester United and Benfica agreed the loan of Alvaro Carreras until the end of the season.

The fullback is still fighting for his place in the Eagles’ squad, as he isn’t a regular starter yet, and only made seven appearances there.

It turns out that as O Jogo today covers Benfica’s Europa League clash Toulouse, where Carreras was brought in at half-time, they claim it’s actually likely that the Lisbon side will buy him from Manchester United.

The newspaper first writes that the Eagles ‘intend to keep him’ and then show some quotes which show the 20-year-old is very well adapted to his new club.

“It’s been a while, we’re growing, I want to help the team. The players and coaches have helped me. Benfica is a good place to grow up, that’s why I came here. I adapt quickly and feel welcomed. I’m very happy in Portugal,” said Carreras.

Benfica do not have to negotiate with Manchester United in case they buy Carreras, as the loan deal includes an option to buy him in the summer.

According to reports from the Protuguese media at the time, the transfer would cost them €6m.

The fullback belongs to the Red Devils since 2020, when he joined from Real Madrid.

This is his third loan, following his spells at Preston North End and Granada.
