St. Gallen sporting director Alain Sutter has revealed he told goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi he will drive him to Manchester United if they ever make a bid for him.
Zigi has been with the Swiss side since a move from FC Sochaux in January 2024, going on to make 108 appearances in all competitions to date.
He is also a regular for his country, Ghana, who he made his debut for in 2018 against Iceland and has since made 13 appearances for in all competitions.
Three of those came at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year, where he started and played 90 minutes in Ghana’s clashes with Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
That propelled the 26-year-old onto a global stage, albeit for a brief period, and potentially into the spotlight for clubs around Europe.
“First of all, I was happy that he was called up. And then that he was allowed to play,” he told Tagblatt, relayed by Nau.ch.
“Sign the contract before the World Cup, deliver a huge tournament! Then your favourite club Manchester United will come, buy you and I’ll drive you up there.
“We don’t want to chain him to us but create something together. It would be absurd to hope that your own player plays badly at a World Cup.”
