During the 2018/19 season, Tottenham Hotspur exercised the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract by one more year.
The Belgium international’s current deal expires in 2020 and has a release clause of £25m in his contract.
Over the last few weeks, several reports indicated that Manchester United and Juventus would be interested in securing the services of the centre-back in the summer.
Two days ago, The Sun in England reported that Spurs have identified Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake as a replacement for the former Southampton man.
The 30-year-old played the full 90 minutes for his county against Kazakhstan on Sunday and after the match, he spoke to reporters in the mixed zone.
DH have put together his comments and one of the questions posed to Alderweireld was if he would still be a player of the north London club next season.
To which, the defender replied: “Yes, yes, I still have a contract. So, I’ll be there. After a few weeks of vacation, I’ll have the freshness and the desire to start the season again at Tottenham.”
Alderweireld also spoke about his disappointment after Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final earlier this month.
“This week, I had a hard time digesting the loss. When you lose a Champions League final, you want to go home and be with your family and not see football for a few weeks,” he said.
“However, after a few days, I turned the button and I charged my batteries one last time [for Belgium’s matches against Kazakhstan and Scotland]. It’s time for the season to be over.”
Whereas once it looked near certain that Alderweireld would be leaving Spurs this summer, now a stay seems a reasonable possibility.
