Leeds United’s Joël Piroe has expressed his desire to return to PSV Eindhoven at some stage of his playing career.
Voetbal International have had a chat with the 25-year-old and he opened about wanting to return to the Eredivisie side and his international future.
Piroe graduated from the Dutch club’s academy and made 14 appearances for their first team. He was unhappy with his spell at PSV, which included a loan to Sparta Rotterdam during the 2019/20 season.
“That club is the most ingrained in me. And my time there didn’t end the way I had hoped. So, I will always be open to a return. It’s not realistic now. But who knows, later,” he said.
He’s aware PSV can’t afford to buy him, at least in the summer window, as his contract lasts until 2027.
Leeds secured promotion to the Premier League and also won the Championship. Piroe was an integral part of Daniel Farke’s squad, scoring 19 goals and registering seven assists 46 league games this season.
The Dutchman arrived in the UK when Swansea City signed him from PSV in 2021 and the Swans sold him to Leeds in 2023. He will experience the Premier League for the first time next season and is hopeful that can improve his chances of representing the Netherlands.
“I think I’m good enough for it. It’s still a bit of a shame how the Eredivisie and the Championship are weighed against each other. The pace and intensity are so much higher here than in the Netherlands,” Piroe explained.
“Next year, I hope to be able to show myself at the highest level, then I’ll really be knocking on the door.”
According to VI, the Whites player is also eligible to represent Suriname, and their football association have already contacted him. Piroe hasn’t responded to them yet as he hopes to represent Oranje.
