The Anel Ahmedhodzic to Brentford story has been building in recent days, and this is a January transfer which it feels has a good chance of happening.
Five days ago we covered a report from Sweden which stated Brentford have ‘serious interest’ in the Malmö FF player, having scouted the 22-year-old defender repeatedly.
Then on Friday, the player himself was asked about moving to the Premier League club and teaming up with Pontus Jansson, and replied: “(Laughs) I knew that question [about Brentford links] was coming. I saw it yesterday. He is a fantastic player and he was my role model in Malmö FF. He was the one I looked up to. It would be really huge.
“But I can answer all these questions after the match on Saturday. I will have answers. Better answers anyway, not so boring.”
They drew the Saturday match 0-0 with Halmstad and were crowned Swedish champions. Sure enough, Ahmedhodzic spoke about his future after the game and made it as clear as possible that a winter move is happening.
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet quote him as saying: “I do not say which club it is but I will leave in January. Nothing is clear but I have little to choose from. I’m done with the Allsvenskan. Then I get to come back in ten years.”
Aftonbladet say it ‘can be Brentford’, and whilst the player didn’t want to name the club directly he did drop hints about a move to English football: “The dream league is the Premier League, but the most important thing is playing time.”
MFF’s sport director Andreas Georgsson also gave his view: “We will see what the market looks like in January, if the clubs are prepared to match what we think Anel is worth. After these last few months, I would not be surprised if the interest is even greater. He has been good in Champions League matches against the absolute best opposition.
“He has shown that he is at the absolute highest level. But it is a little difficult to know where the football market is in terms of price.”
Brentford are currently 12th in the Premier League and will rise higher should results go in their favour on Sunday.
