Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has warned Alisson Becker he intends to fight for the number one spot at Liverpool, even if the Brazilian doesn’t leave.
El Desmarque cover comments from the Georgian goalkeeper today to the first channel of Georgian Television.
Mamardashvili is set to move to Liverpool next summer after the Reds moved to get him this year in a €30m deal.
They have loaned the 24-year-old back to Valencia for this season before then taking him on a permanent basis ahead of next season.
It’s unclear at this moment in time what their plan will be at that point, with current number one and key player Alisson still in the picture on a contract that doesn’t expire until June 2027.
The 32-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia over the last few months as they continue to target the biggest players in Europe for their growing project.
Whether he accepts such an approach remains to be seen but there is a growing belief Liverpool would be happy to move him on while they can, particularly now that injury issues have started to mount up.
The signing of Mamardashvili fits into that idea but even if Alisson doesn’t leave, the Georgian is ready to fight.
“I was attracted to the Liverpool project when the club’s representatives met with me to sign me,” he said.
“I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position, even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team.”
