Brazilian winger Willian has finally spoken out following his summer move from Arsenal to Corinthians.
At the weekend, TV Corinthians released an interview with the player in which he explains why he chose to leave the Gunners and rejoin his childhood club.
The 33-year-old showed how glad he is to finally be back at the Brazilian side where he started his career. And when speaking of his move away from Arsenal, he says he was ‘not happy’ at the Premier League side.
“I really thought a lot, together with my family and close people. Unfortunately, my time at Arsenal was not good, I wasn’t happy at the club”, said Willian (via Gazeta Esportiva).
“I don’t need to go into details, but I wasn’t happy and I thought that returning to Brazil was the best option. I studied some other opportunities, but I wanted to return to Corinthians, to my home, to be close to my family. It’s the club that projected me to the world, revealed me. The right time to come back was this.”
Willian joined Arsenal as a free agent in the summer of 2020, following the end of his contract with Chelsea. In his time in North London, he had one goal and seven assists in 37 appearances.
According to reports from Brazil, the Gunners only accepted to let him go for free once he proved to them he had an offer from Corinthians. Otherwise, and specifically if he moved to another club in Europe, the London side would have have demanded a fee.
