Emiliano Martinez finds himself all over the world football news on Monday, being one of the Premier League based players at the centre of the Brazil and Argentina drama.

He’s also the subject of a transfer story in Spain, with La Razon reporting Atletico Madrid have interest in the Aston Villa goalkeeper.

Their current stopper, Jan Oblak, is considered one of the best in the world, yet there’s a chance he could be sold next summer. Atletico are at the limit of their salary allowance and will need a big exit if they’re to bring in senior reinforcements.

Oblak is one of the best paid players in Diego Simeone’s squad and has a contract lasting until June 2023. If he doesn’t renew ahead of next summer, Los Rojiblancos will look to sell him, freeing up space in their budget and avoiding the chance of a free exit.

Aware of this potential situation, Atletico have been considering replacements, and that’s seen them turn to Martinez. It’s acknowledged that the transfer would be expensive, with Aston Villa obviously not keen on a sale, but it’s thought the Argentine’s transfer fee would be less than what Atleti would receive for Oblak.
