Newcastle United’s Matz Sels has had a season in Anderlecht which had gradually got better and better. Forced to fight for his place at the beginning of the campaign, Sels will have been concerned that his loan back to Belgium hadn’t really been the best idea.
But the goalkeeper completely committed himself and proved beyond doubt that Anderlecht have to pick him whenever he’s available. Now in the Belgium end of season play-offs (that’s how the championship is decided), SportFoot magazine believe the Newcastle owned player will be crucial.
Dubbing Sels ‘Mr Nice Guy’ it’s explained how he he hardly ever gets booked, isn’t dishonest with referees, and generally goes about things the right way. It’s more his goalkeeping skills which are winning fans at Anderlecht, and SportFoot wanted to know if he’s staying.
It’s fair to say Sels is continuing to consider every possibility for his future: “At the moment, I could make statements in all directions: I want to stay in Anderlecht, I want to leave, I want another club. But I have to wait. I depend on Newcastle’s project, to which I remain bound for several years. I have not had news in a few months but I do not let it get in my head. As soon as the club has ensured their stay in the Premier League, which seems well started, they will contact me.”
The goalkeeper was then asked if he feels he could succeed in the Premier League, and Sels answered: “Certainly. At least if I keep my current level.”
A Newcastle United future has to be considered unlikely, but Sels having a good season can only be a positive for the club and their attempts to find the Belgian a new home.
