Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has revealed his on-pitch antics are a way of energising the Elland Road faithful so that they back the team for the whole game.
The 28 year old quickly became a cult hero with the Elland Road faithful after his move from Torino in 2017.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Jansson was asked about playing for Leeds United and for their supporters: “I think as a player you have to have respect and know your club, know the history, know how big the club is. I really know what Leeds United means to the people. For me it’s a responsibility. I have to so something good for the club.”
The Swede added: “I said to my team-mates, when I go up the stands and try to build energy in the stadium, I don’t do it for myself. I do it to get the energy up and help my teammates. I know when Elland Road is pumped up with energy, it’s tougher for the opponents. I want the Leeds fans to be with us for 90 minutes.”
Leeds United will especially need the leadership qualities of Jansson and the club’s fans after missing out on automatic promotion to the Premier League. Yesterday’s draw with Aston Villa means Marcelo Bielsa’s side will now been involved in the play-offs.
Defeats to Wigan Athletic and Brentford in recent weeks resulted in Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United overtaking them for second place, with the Blades now set for top flight football next season.
It’s looking likely Leeds United will face either Derby Country or Middlesbrough, whilst the other tie will be contested by Aston Villa and West Brom.
