Arsenal take on Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final and the clash will see them face a team led by their former manager, Unai Emery.
Ahead of the two-legged tie, Spanish newspaper AS interviewed Robert Pires, who represented both clubs during his playing career.
Apart from reaching the semi-final of the second-tier European competition, the Gunners have struggled in the league and cup competitions this season.
Arsenal are 10th in the table with 46 points, and are 12 points behind Chelsea, who are sitting in fourth spot. They are certain to finish outside the top four and only a success in the Europa League will guarantee them a place in next season’s Champions League.
The north London club’s legend said he’s in contact with Mikel Arteta and gave his take on the current situation at the Emirates.
“It’s true, that it’s strange. I see the situation [at Arsenal] with sadness, I speak with Arteta and I see that it has not been an easy year. What can save them is to win this Europa League and thus play the Champions League next year,” Pires said.
The former France international is of the belief the Emery factor could give the La Liga side an advantage over Arsenal in the Europa League.
“It’s hard to give a favourite for the semi-final. I’d say 50%. It’s hard to get it right. I think Villarreal has the advantage of having Emery, a coach who has done very well in that competition.”
Pires spent six seasons with the Gunners, where he won the titles and cup competitions, before signing for the Yellow Submarine in 2006.
When further quizzed how Arsenal can get back to their glory days like the ones he experienced, Pires said: “I think Arsenal need an idea that gives them confidence. During Wenger’s time, it was key to have an idea, to be convinced of it and we had that.
“And also having a good mix of quality players, so we managed to put it all together. Hopefully Arteta can be the one who makes the team regain those good feelings.”
