If there’s one criticism many people have about Romelu Lukaku, it’s his first touch.
This was a recurring thing at Everton, and while it’s died down a bit since he moved to Manchester United, it hasn’t entirely gone away.
In fact, it appears the jokes about Lukaku’s first touch have made it all the way to his teammates in the Belgium squad, as revealed by Dries Mertens in an interview with RTBF.
Asked about various players in the national team, the Napoli forward discussed those with the best technique, with his answer being Jan Vertonghen.
However, he also used that opportunity to talk about Romelu Lukaku.
He said: “He’s improved a lot. People laugh about his touch, but he’s a guy who, after training, takes 20 balls and continues to train. I really respect him for that.”
While Lukaku didn’t have the greatest first season with his new club, it wasn’t awful either, and there’s certainly a lot to look forward to for Manchester United fans, especially if José Mourinho manages to get those around the forward to provide him with better chances.
The former Everton and Chelsea starlet has scored 27 goals and picked up nine assists in 50 appearances in all competition.
