Leeds United Pontus Jansson has told the Swedish media he feels he made an impression during last nights game against Austria.
The 27 year old captained his country for the first time during the game in Vienna.
Speaking to SVT after the match, the Leeds United player said on his performance: “I played with great authority and leadership. I feel in good shape. I absolutely think I’m strengthening my shares. I feel strong.”
Jansson has been touted as a possible future Sweden captain, along with Manchester United’s Victor Lindelöf. This is likely to be Andreas Granqvist’s last competition with his country and the two central defenders could be going up against each other to become the next skipper.
After this summer’s World Cup, Jansson said he would be interested in taking up the role if Granqvist quit, but a few weeks later the former Wigan Athletic player announced he would be prolonging his international career.
However, the Leeds United star wouldn’t have done his chances any harm last night and may now have ambitions to replace Granqvist in Janne Andersson’s starting eleven.
The Swede will be looking to start the game against Turkey next week when his country commence their UEFA Nations League campaign.
