Former Ukraine coach Myron Markevych has backed Vitaliy Mykolenko to be a success at Everton, should the move go through as expected.

Mykolenko has been heavily linked with a move to Everton this week, with reports in England stating that a €22-25m deal is in the pipeline.

The defender has reportedly already flown to Liverpool to undergo a medical at Finch Farm, with reports in Ukraine stating he has returned to the country to wait for Everton to finalise a deal with Dynamo Kyiv.

That’s looking increasingly likely, with it believed the 22-year-old could be arriving at Goodison Park as a replacement for Lucas Digne.

The Frenchman has had something of a falling out with Rafa Benitez behind the scenes, and there is already talk of a move away in the January transfer window, with big European sides such as Juventus, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid thought to be among his suitors.

Digne would leave big shoes to fill should he depart, having been a key player for the Toffees since his arrival from Barcelona.

Yesterday we covered comments from former Dynamo Kyiv and Ukraine boss Yozhef Sabo warning that the move to Everton might be too soon for Mykolenko, but Markevych is having none of that.

“By his dedication, his desire to improve, Vitaliy Mykolenko deserved such a challenge in his career,” he told Meta Ratings.

“It’s really a real challenge for the 22-year-old, who has proven with his quality play recently at all levels that he is ready to test his capabilities in the world’s strongest soccer league.

“I had to read the statements of some experts that it’s too early for Mykolenko to go to England. I do not think so, on the contrary, Vitaliy urgently need to bid farewell to the UPL championship.

“At one time, when heading Metalist, we had to play in the European Cup with Everton, and we had the opportunity to see the popularity of the club in Liverpool, what demanding fans it has.

“I have no doubt that thanks to his desire to play through thick and thin, Mykolenko will gain credibility with the local fans and do his best to get Everton out of the relegation zone.

“In general, the transfer of Dynamo player to Everton will enhance the image of Ukrainian soccer in the international arena.”
