Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães has had a good spell so far with club and country in this calendar year.

Towards the end of the winter market, the midfielder left Lyon and sealed a switch to the Tyneside club. After coming off the bench in his first few matches, Eddie Howe handed the 24-year-old a place in his starting lineup in the last three league matches.

The Brazil international’s performances for Lyon and Newcastle this season helped him make it to Tite’s squad for Seleção’s matches in February and March. He was on the bench against Chile, but made appearances against Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia, and made an impact in all three matches.

Guimarães also scored his first goal for Brazil in their 4-0 win over Bolivia on Tuesday, shortly after finding out he will become a father for the first time.

“The feeling is unique. It was for my son or my daughter, I don’t know which one it will be, but I’m happy to share it with good people, who cheer for me,” he said, as quoted by Globo Esporte.

“The goal is the highest point of a player’s career, even more so the first with the national team shirt. If I could, I would frame the goal, it was very beautiful and it was my first.

“I’m very happy, I hope more goals and good performances can come with the national team shirt. Without a doubt, today I fulfilled another childhood dream.”

The former Ligue 1 man also spoke about his new adventure in the Premier League, and made it clear he wants to write himself in the history books of Newcastle United.

“The game is much more dynamic, at a much higher intensity, here I had time to think, this helped me a lot. English football is the most competitive in the world, it’s a game where you have to be very connected,” Guimarães explained.

“Here, when you have more time to think, it helps a lot. English football is a place I always wanted to be, I never hid it from anyone, Newcastle gave me this opportunity with a big project. I hope to write my name there too.”
