Aston Villa returned to the Champions League for the first time in over four decades this season.

The Villans celebrated their first Champions League tie at Villa Park with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Jhon Durán came off the bench to score the winner in the 79th minute.

Aston Villa star Emiliano Martínez was impressive against the Bundesliga side yesterday. After the tie, the goalkeeper spoke to ESPN Argentina, relayed by TNT Sports, to explain what he wants to achieve with the Premier League side.

The 32-year-old has been the first-choice stopper for the English club since joining them from Arsenal in 2020. His displays for Aston Villa helped him make his debut for Argentina a year later.

Martínez has won the World Cup and two Copa América with the national team. He has now set his sights on winning silverware with Unai Emery’s side.

“I’m crazy about continuing to grow, becoming the best and winning everything with Aston Villa. I set out to play in the Champions League and I was able to achieve it. I have no ceiling, I want to continue growing and I try to show it in every match,” he said.

Aston Villa are currently fifth in the league table, trailing second placed Manchester City by a point and two behind leaders Liverpool.

The goalkeeper has conceded nine goals and kept two clean sheets from eight games for Emery’s side this season.

“They are scoring goals against me in the Premier League and that affects me a lot. I’m a fan of clean sheets and I work hard for that. Yesterday we worked on reacting to the ball and concentrating only on the ball. And today was very good for me,” Martínez explained.
