The Brazilian national team will never get revenge against Germany for the 7-1 defeat in the 2014 World Cup. That’s something that just isn’t going to happen, partly because the occasion is unlikely to present itself.

But the win in this week’s friendly still meant something for Brazil. Not only to expel the ghosts from the best, but also as a motivation that a new era is about to come.

Many remember the picture of Gabriel Jesus, now at Manchester City, where the player was painting the streets green and yellow just before the 2014 World Cup. With the defeat to Germany in the semifinal, he was just one among millions of Brazilians who were completely frustrated with that elimination.

But four years later, here we are. The former 16-year-old has become a Manchester City star, and was now responsible for scoring the winning goal against the rivals.

Gabriel Jesus has spoken about it after the 1-0 win over Germany, and revealed his feelings for such a quick change in his life.

“I had a childhood like many Brazilians, not just football players. It wasn’t a difficult childhood, because thanks to my mother I had something to eat at home and I was able to live my childhood life. When I look back and see old photos, it motivates me even more,” he said (via O Globo).

“We have to run after our dreams. Who can make the dreams come true is because they ran after it, and I was no different. But sometimes I confess that it gives me a ‘relapse’ and I get very emotional. When I get home, I lay my head on the pillow and see these pictures, I get emotional. To think that four years ago I was running after it and looking at what I am living today… I am very happy for what I am able to accomplish.”

And the next dream for Gabriel is winning the Premier League with Manchester City, followed by the small matter of a World Cup.
