Over the past week or so, there have been an increasing number of claims that Bayern Munich, in search of some help at the back, want Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier.
It makes sense on paper, since the England international would be cheap, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, but there is a belief the Bavarian side can do better.
This is what Didi Hamann thinks, as he gave his two cents to Sky Germany about the idea of Dier leaving Tottenham to head to Bayern.
He said: “I have my doubts as to whether he’ll help Bayern. He had a really good phase four or five years ago, when he was an integral part of the national team.”
Hamann backs this up by pointing out that Dier hasn’t played all that much under Ange Postecoglou this season at Tottenham, making a mere four appearances to date.
However, he does believe that a fully fit player could be of use to the Bundesliga giants, because he is everything they need on paper.
He added: “He’s strong in a tackle, strong on the ball, very disciplined. Whether he’s in the right frame of mind to help Bayern at the moment remains to be seen. If you haven’t played for six months or have hardly played at all, then you need two or three months to get back into the rhythm.
“He’s supposed to help them this season – and if he needs two or three months, then the season is almost over. That’s why I have concerns.”
In terms of settling in, there’s no doubt the presence of Harry Kane would be beneficial, but, as Hamman says, it remains to be seen whether Bayern want to take a gamble on the Tottenham player, who might struggle at first to have the impact desired.
