Aston Villa appointed Steven Gerrard as Dean Smith’s successor last November and in his first transfer window, he signed Robin Olsen.

The Villans took the goalkeeper on loan from AS Roma and he made only one appearance, which came in their 3-2 defeat against Manchester City in the last league tie of the season.

Aston Villa’s defeat at the Etihad meant Pep Guardiola’s side beat Liverpool to the title. Manchester City fans invaded the pitch after full time and the 32-year-old was attacked by some of their supporters.

The Sweden international is currently with the national team and spoke to the media on Wednesday. His comments are relayed by Fotbollskanalen.

Regarding the incident at the Etihad, Olsen said: “It is clear that it is a shock. Okay if people run in, but I do not expect people to jump on me. So, it was a shock.

“Of course, it’s unfortunate, but there is nothing that takes away from me what I experienced. It means more to me. But then it’s clear that it’s unfortunate. That should not happen.”

On featuring against Manchester City, the custodian explained: “It means a lot. It is one of the most difficult matches you can jump into and play, and just in the situation that City were in, that you had to win. It was incredibly nice, and it felt very good during large parts of the match, until City put in another gear and scored three quick goals.”

Olsen has a year left on his contract at Roma and reports last week indicated that Aston Villa are ‘close’ to buying him this summer.

When asked what it means to him that Gerrard has had positive things to say about him, the Swede said: “Of course it’s fun that the coach talks well about me. But I feel that I have come in well in the group and in the club.”

Despite all this, Olsen is not clear whether he will continue at Aston Villa next season.

“I don’t know. I guess it looks that way if you read the media. But there’s still a lot that can happen. But I like it very much there. I feel incredibly good. Fantastic club, and I feel that I have developed a lot. We will see how it turns out,” Olsen added.
