Serbia defender Miloš Veljković has admitted he could have done more to stop Tottenham’s Richarlison from scoring his overhead kick at the World Cup.
Richarlison bagged the goal of the tournament in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Serbia in the Group stages back at the end of November.
He initially mis-controlled Vinicius Junior’s cross but reacted swiftly to lash home an overhead kick beyond goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić and double his side’s lead.
The strike was later voted the best of the bunch in Qatar by the public, beating the likes of Salem Al-Dawsari, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar to the honour.
It is a strike that the Tottenham man is unlikely to forget anytime soon and was certainly one of the highlights of a tournament that the Selecao will want to forget about quickly.
The same cannot be said for Serbia, of course, who would more than happily forget the moment ever happened.
That’s certainly the case for defender Miloš Veljković who, despite praising the Tottenham’s star’s strike, admits he could have probably done more to prevent it.
“(It’s a) world-class goal,” he told Kicker.
“He (Vinicius) didn’t fake it and played the ball in quickly with the outside of his foot. And then it was actually an unclean first contact from Richarlison.
“But he still got his bearings on the ball and put it in well. I could have been closer, (but I) no longer think about what I could have done differently. Because, as I said: That was a world-class goal.”
