Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen was hugely disappointed following Sweden’s 3-0 defeat to Azerbaijan on Thursday.
Azerbaijan are currently 120th in FIFA’s world rankings and Aftonbladet have labelled the latest defeat an ‘historical fiasco’. They also point out Sweden haven’t lost to such a ‘low-ranked opposition’ since the global rankings was introduced 30 years ago.
The Aston Villa stopper, who has been featuring regularly for his country, played the full 90 minutes in yesterday’s loss. Sweden conceded two goals in the first six minutes before the hosts scored the third goal late in the game.
Olsen states Sweden’s latest performance was “really embarrassing” and he also had a go at his teammates. The 33-year-old, however, has refused to publicly talk about what was discussed inside the dressing room.
“I was angry. But what happened must stay in there. Believe me, I said something, but we keep it in there. We should be ashamed. I am ashamed. At the same time, it hurts like hell to stand here with a result like this,” he said.
The Villans player was honest in admitting the defeat against Azerbaijan was the ‘worst moment’ he has experienced with the national team.
“Yes, I have to say that, it’s tough… So, hell, standing here in Azerbaijan. With all due respect to Azerbaijan, but to lose this game with these numbers, it shouldn’t happen,” Olsen explained.
Sweden manager Janne Andersson will step down from his post after the European qualifier against Estonia on Sunday, and Olsen remains hopeful he can help end Andersson’s spell on a positive note.
