After having two bids for Gelson Martins from Sporting rejected, it seems that Arsenal could end up signing the player on a free transfer or via the Portuguese courts.
As it’s pretty much known by now, several Sporting players had been threatening to rescind their contracts with the club due to the attack at the training centre last month.
And this afternoon, outlet O Jogo claims that Gelson Martins, Bruno Fernandes and William Carvalho have all submitted a request to terminate their contracts.
Now Sporting needs to decide what to, and the situation is likely heading for the courts.
Arsenal’s bids for Gelson Martins were reportedly both €30m. The amount was considered to be too low because of his potential, while his contract with Sporting protected him with a €60m release clause, with the club having an option to increase it to €100m.
Martins, Carvalho and Fernandes are three players who the Lions expected to make a lot of money from with their sales. Now unless the court goes against the players, they are leaving without leaving a penny to the club.
An interesting situation for Arsenal.
