Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero offered Mikkel Damsgaard to AS Roma on Wednesday, which was quite an unusual move.
Speaking to the Italian media, Ferrero, who is a Roma fan, said the Denmark international is the midfielder Jose Mourinho needs. He even said that if Roma contacted him he’d find a way to make the deal happen, and this obviously hasn’t gone down well with Fiorentina fans.
Ferrero’s comments make it very clear that Damsgaard is for sale this summer, which should come as positive news to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs are one of several Premier League clubs who have been linked with the player in recent weeks, with Leeds United another side to have been repeatedly mentioned as in the race.
La Repubblica, via Calciomercato, report Tottenham have now made their first offer for the 21-year-old. That bid is put at ‘higher than €20m’ but not as high as the €40m Sampdoria have been hoping for.
Calciomercato report that Ferrero’s hope for €40m seems ‘implausible’ and they suggest €30m looks a good starting point for negotiations. Sampdoria are highly unlikely to get anything like €40m from Roma, they would also likely struggle for €30m, and that’s if Mourinho takes the bait.
Either way, Tottenham’s first offer won’t be accepted so Spurs will have to try again for Damsgaard.
Last season, the Sampdoria player made 35 appearances in Serie A, scoring two goals and adding four assists. He played mainly on the left wing, but is very versatile and can operate across midfield and behind a striker.
