While the rest of the world continues to simply dislike Neal Maupay, it seems the Everton loanee has earned himself one admirer: Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi.
RMC Sport cover comments from the Italian boss today in which he labels Maupay as “the perfect player” as the striker continues to do well on loan under his leadership.
Maupay has three goals and four assists in 13 games for the French side this season after joining them on loan in the summer transfer window from Everton.
He was public enemy number one at Goodison Park before his departure following a very public falling out with Everton fans in London after the defeat to Tottenham.
That came on the back of a miserable spell at the club which saw him manage one goal and two assists in 32 games and shipped out on loan to Brentford last season.
He’s continued to stir the pot since, posting regularly to stick the knife into his former club and create controversy, particularly when Everton lose.
It seems that dislike isn’t a sentiment shared at Marseille, though, where he’s a favourite, particularly for manager Robert de Zerbi.
“Maupay is the perfect player, everyone would want him in their team,” he said.
“He doesn’t have 20 goals per season under his belt. But between the goals, the passes, his commitment to the actions, his character and his leadership, he’s a player that I would always like to have. I would like him until I leave here. If I see him, I feel better.”
