Bryan Gil has struggled to shine for Tottenham Hotspur since he joined them from Sevilla in 2021.
He was allowed to return to the La Liga side on loan in January and has featured in every fixture for them so far. The winger has a goal and an assist to his name from nine matches in all competitions.
The Tottenham owned player struggled in Sevilla’s 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League. The 22-year-old has partly blamed this on being distracted by information from the Spanish club’s analyst.
“I do not like to see videos of rivals. Against PSV at home, talking to the analyst, he told me that I could face the right-back, that he had ease there and I never once left the side, and when the game ended I told him ‘please don’t show me any more images of the fullbacks’,” he said, as quoted by Estadio Deportivo.
“I don’t like to see how they defend because I think it conditions you. When I have studied it, it has never gone well for me because you start thinking that you have to do that, it hasn’t helped me.”
The Spain international hasn’t been able to feel important at Tottenham because Antonio Conte has favoured players who are more physical than him. Gil has made it clear that his priority is to play regular football, which he hasn’t achieved at Spurs so far.
“It doesn’t matter if I earn more or less, that my parents do not lack anything is the first thing,” Gil explained.
“I’ve always told my agent that I always want to play, no matter where, if it’s at Sevilla then much better, when you feel important is when you play. In the elite everyone has talent, but confidence is what gives you the extra point.”
Sevilla don’t have an option to make Gil’s stay permanent, meaning he will have to return to Tottenham after this season.
It’s not clear where his long-term future lies.
