Bryan Gil has revealed he came close to joining Valencia last summer before Tottenham Hotspur blocked his move.

The winger spent the second half of last season on loan at the La Liga side and they were keen to retain him this season.

That didn’t happen and Antonio Conte included the 22-year-old in his plans at Tottenham. Gil clocked in over 300 minutes from 11 matches in all competitions for Spurs this season.

He returned to Sevilla on a loan deal in January. The Tottenham owned player was a guest on Sevilla FC TV’s A Balón Parado, where he discussed the failed move to Valencia and his transfer to the Andalusian club.

“In the summer I was close to going to Valencia. From there, they let me go now (…) It was all very fast, although I told my representative that until I signed, I was not going to believe it. After what happened in summer (with those at Mestalla). In summer it was, I don’t know, 24 hours, the radical change, from a yes to a no,” he said, as quoted by ElDesmarque.

The Spain international came up through Sevilla’s academy and was promoted to their first team in 2019. He was sold to Tottenham in 2021.

On his move to Spurs, Gil explained: “It changed my life, I wanted to try myself in the Premier League and although Conte likes more physical players, I learned a lot from him.”

The attacker is enjoying his second spell at Sevilla and has refused to discuss his future beyond this season.

“I think summer is coming and the season is over. I don’t want it to come [to an end]. Our heads are too busy with the situation to think about summer,” Gil concluded.
