Earlier on Monday, we covered a story in the Italian media about how Fiorentina, in need of a midfielder, were considering making a move for Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira.
The defensive midfielder is currently on loan at Atlético Madrid after Mikel Arteta made it clear he was no longer counting on the Uruguayan, bringing in Thomas Partey to sit in midfield in front of the defence.
That’s worked out fine for the Gunners when the Ghana international has been fit, but Torreira’s move hasn’t exactly been a success so far.
Barely used by Diego Simeone, the former Sampdoria starlet is struggling for minutes in Spain, which led to speculation his move could be cut short and another found to improve his game time.
A return to Italy certainly seems the best option, which is where Fiorentina comes in.
One of the big questions was whether or not Atlético would be prepared to let him go midway through the season, and TuttoMercatoWeb appear to have answered that for us.
The Italian website are reporting there will be a ‘goodbye in January’ between the midfielder and the Spanish idea after he ‘did not meet expectations’.
They claim ‘Simeone has give the green light for Torreira, who is now looking for a new accommodation, to leave’.
It’s said Torino are one of the teams, ‘but other solutions are not excluded’, because the Arsenal man ‘can be a low cost idea for other clubs as well’.
Fiorentina, anyone?
