After eight Premier League matches so far this season, Southampton find themselves in fourth position and have a great chance of making this campaign a real success.
They were involved in European football last year and that’s the same case this time around, meaning Saints players have had far more rest than many of their opponents at other clubs looking to push up the table.
Add that to the settled status under Ralph Hasenhüttl, with Southampton having kept faith with the Austrian manager when others may have not, and things are looking bright.
Jannik Vestergaard is also enjoying a good season, at least in the most recent matches. Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet have an article hyping their compatriot and also have a few words from the Southampton defender.
They quote him as saying: “It is going really well right now in Southampton, where we have got used to the way we play.
“It is very atypical because we are very ball-oriented. We want to win the ball high up the pitch. That’s what we do – as all young children do – many players run to where the ball is. And that, of course, can backfire because we leave some players in free positions.
“But I think we have gradually got used to that way of playing.”
The high-risk football is working so far and Hasenhüttl will have to make sure the team continue to follow the script to the letter, if they’re not to get caught out as the season progresses.
