Rangers’ impressive win over Standard Liege in the Europa League last night was largely down to the weather.
That’s according to Het Laatste Nieuws, who blame the Belgian rain for their side’s defeat to Steven Gerrard’s men.
Rangers came out on top of the Belgian side last night, with goals from James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe, the latter a stunning long-range effort in the dying minutes, sealing all three points.
It was an impressive display from the Scottish Premiership leaders, who continued their good form at the start of this season.
However, HLN argue it wasn’t that which solely saw them to victory, but the heavens opening over the Stade de Sclessin.
To start off proceedings they reference Shirley Mason from Garbage, who happened to be from Scotland, and how she once sang ‘I’m only happy when it rains’, suggesting Rangers were more at home in the downpour.
They explain how ‘thunderclaps, lightning bolts and water everywhere on the field’ ended up turning the game from football into water polo.
And from that moment the fans in the stadium knew it would become ‘difficult’ to score against Rangers, who were a ‘clever, disciplined team’.
Described as ‘solid’ and ‘unyielding’ it’s suggested that the weather meant Standard could not play how they wanted to and Rangers simple ‘thrive better in the bad weather’.
This was backed up by their manager Philippe Montanier, who claimed the thunderstorm was to the ‘advantage’ of the team defending.
In truth, it’s all a little bit weak from the Belgians, who rather than simply admitting they were outplayed have resorted to blaming the rain, despite being from a country synonymous with it.
