The transfer window may be closed in England, but it remains open in Europe, and that means Premier League clubs are vulnerable, which includes Brighton and Hove Albion.

Local newspaper Kreiszeitung are reporting the Seagulls could be about to face a fight with Werder Bremen for defender Bernardo.

They claim the Bundesliga side have turned their attention to the 24-year-old this summer as they look to reinforce their defence.

Bremen are trying to get a deal for Benjamin Henrichs over the line, but that is dragging on, so they have turned their attention to Brighton’s man instead.

There’s no mention of what they’d be looking to pay, or whether they’ve even contacted the Seagulls yet, just that he’s a player the club are interested in.

Whether Brighton would be willing to sell is debatable, though. Bernardo made 27 appearances for the club last season and came off the bench in the 3-0 win over Watford last weekend, so he’s clearly in Graham Potter’s plans.

Given that they can’t sign any replacements, it seems unlikely they’d be willing to let him go unless they get a bid they can’t turn down, or the player pushes for a return to Germany.
