Last week covered several reports from the Catalan media talking about Fulham’s interest in Espanyol’s David Lopez.
On July 28th, Mundo Deportivo claimed the La Liga side have made a great offer to keep the player at the club. The possibility of a counter offer from the Cottagers was still ‘not ruled out’.
Today’s edition of Sport claims Fulham’s offer for both the club and the player meant there was a possibility that Espanyol could have lost Lopez.
Therefore, they opened the negotiations, which have been intense in the past few days. Slaviša Jokanovic’s offer for the Barcelona-born player was ‘higher’, but he has given the priority to continue at the RCDE Stadium.
The 28-year-old is now close to signing a new deal with his current employer. He has already reached a ‘verbal agreement’ in principle to extend his contract and now only the paperwork and official communication is pending.
Sport claims Espanyol could make the news of Lopez signing a new contract official ‘any moment’, which may come as a blow for the newly promoted Premier League club.
Alternatively, as we’ve suggested previously, Fulham’s name may well have been used throughout this process to push for a better renewal deal from Espanyol.
