With funds perhaps a bit more limited than usual in this year’s summer transfer market due to the Covid-19 pandemic, clubs could end up turning to players out of contract, especially youngsters.

But, having hired Marcel Brands as their director of football, it isn’t surprising to see Everton do this regardless of their financial situation, and when a player like Niels Nkounkou, currently at Marseille, becomes available, teams take notice.

The Toffees are one of these, according to a France Football correspondent focusing on Marseille’s academy, who revealed on social media that Carlo Ancelotti’s side were one of two club ‘coveting’ the left-back.

Yet to sign his professional contract with the Ligue 1 side, the 19-year-old is also being tracked by relatively local rivals Nice in France, while it’s pointed out by the account he was also watched by one of Barcelona’s scouts last year.

Nkounkou, who has already been capped by France with the U19s, has yet to make an appearance for Marseille first-team, but appeared on their bench twice this season, first in 2-0 win over Strasbourg followed by the 1-0 loss against Lyon in the Coupe de France quarter-finals.

We’ll have to wait and see if Everton make a move in the coming months, but if there’s a chance of picking up a good talent for little money, then why not?
