French regional newspaper Le Progres report two Lyon fans are in a Liverpool hospital, and stayed there overnight, after it’s claimed that were attacked by Everton supporters.
Le Progres say a group of Lyon fans passed a bar filled with Everton supporters, and were attacked. One of the fans is said to have been beaten, whilst the second hospitalisation involved a ‘cutter’, although the injuries aren’t described as being serious, with Le Progres saying it could have been much worse.
Everton’s brave new season isn’t exactly going to plan and Thursday was a match, and an event, which somewhat brought everything together.
Earlier in the week, Liverpool had led the way for Merseyside, with Jurgen Klopp’s men beating Maribor 7-0. Despite being in the weaker Europa competition, Everton had the harder fixture against Lyon, but were at home and will be disappointed with a loss.
It seemed to send some Everton players, notably Ashley Williams, over the edge, and as a brawl broke out fans got involved too. Whilst a few idiots can’t be an example for all of the Goodison Park support, it’s not unfair to say there’s an anger at the club, some just show it the wrong way.
Meanwhile, Ronald Koeman stood on the sidelines with an unshaven look that was more dishevelled than planned grooming.
Le Progres say that aside from the ones who got hurt, it was a good night for Lyon fans, and it’s hoped the two who were hospitalised will be able to return to France on Friday.
