Leicester City had to put up a serious fight to get Wesley Fofana from Saint Etienne during the last transfer window.
ASSE, and particularly their manager Claude Puel, wanted to keep the defender for the current season, before a potential sale next summer. Fofana was presented as thinking the Foxes were his big chance, and the contract on offer at Leicester an opportunity to secure the financial futures of himself and his family.
After several battles, some of them rather public, the defender got his way and has already shown why Leicester were willing to put so much effort into the transfer.
Called up for the current France U21 squad, news came on Monday of a potential injury problem. Fofana has picked up a knee issue, and whilst it’s not thought to be serious, it’s something which the French medical team will evaluate in the coming days.
Given the level and progress he’s shown over the past year, there’s already been chatter of Fofana appearing for the senior national team in the not too distant future.
Didier Deschamps was today asked about the Leicester player, and whilst he made clear there’s tough competition for defensive berths, he also said Fofana had already impressed with Saint Etienne.
The manager added, as quoted by L’Equipe, that the youngster is very much on the list of players being looked at: “He is a young player who confirms at his new club that he is up to the task. He is one of the players we follow.”
