While most clubs wouldn’t really care (at least publicly) if a bunch of stories about one of their transfers came out a day early, Lyon and Jean-Michel Aulas are very different.
On Thursday night, a number of articles were published both in France and England reporting the Ligue 1 club and Liverpool were getting closer to an agreement for the transfer of Nabil Fekir, with a medical expected to take place soon.
However, Lyon, first thing on Friday, took to Twitter to explain the information that had circulated the previous evening was false.
Despite this, RMC Sport provide a new update around the same time, claiming Fekir had indeed undergone some medical tests under a Liverpool doctor’s supervision at Clairefontaine on Thursday night and Friday morning, with the English club now awaiting the results.
The French outlet then go on to say that once those come in, the Reds will announce the €70m transfer during the day before the stock market closes.
While this transfer does seem to be well on its way to completion, leaking the news early might not have been the smartest move by Liverpool (if it was them), who could have ended up shooting themselves in the foot.
It’s worth noting that even though L’Equipe were first with the news on Thursday, they made it very clear it was from their own English sources.
Aulas won’t have been pleased about it, especially since it came less than 12 hours after he said the talks were ‘at a standstill’, and he could very well now make Liverpool sweat just to save face.
