We need to talk about Clinton N’Jié.
The Tottenham winger was sent on loan to Marseille last season, where he had a rather underwhelming campaign under both Franck Passi and Rudi Garcia, scoring four goals in 22 league appearances, as well as picking up an assist.
There were plenty of rumours of an option for the Ligue 1 side to make the deal permanent at around £6m, without it ever being officially confirmed.
What’s interesting here is that, as of yet, there has been no announcement regarding his future despite the player turning up for Marseille’s preseason, even scoring two goals in a 4-2 friendly win against Romania’s Liga I champions FC Viitorul.
Reports from the London based press suggest a £6m deal has been struck between Spurs and the French club for the Cameroon winger, but Sport Witness have been assured N’Jie is still a Tottenham player and that will remain the case until there’s an announcement otherwise.
Whether that means the paperwork hasn’t been completed yet remains to be seen, but it’s all a bit strange.
Furthermore, Marseille are also yet to announce his official ‘arrival’ either.
This isn’t the first time a club has ‘forgotten’ to announce the departure of one of their players, as Manchester United tried to sweep under the carpet the exit of their Serbian goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.
Are Tottenham doing the same and hoping everyone forgets they spent £12m on N’Jié back in 2016 only to play him eight times in the Premier League before offloading him?
Hopefully we’ll get some confirmation soon.
