Former Leeds United forward Mirco Antenucci has told the Italian media his only negative aspect during his time at the club was Massimo Cellino. The 32-year-old spent two seasons at Leeds United before being released by the club last May.
Speaking to Calciomercato, Antenucci said he had a good experience whilst at Leeds United, but the actions of Cellino need to be questioned. The SPAL forward accused the Leeds United chief of not playing him because he was about to reach 12 goals in his first season, which would have meant giving him an extension to his contract.
However, Antenucci said despite not being given an extension last summer he still has affection for Leeds United fans for the way they treated him.
“Almost all positive aspects, except Cellino… Out of the blue, the first year I had a clause to score 12 goals in order to renew my contract, I reached 10 goals I did not play. It means that not only in Italy these things happen, but also in England, even if done by an Italian. Beyond that, I take on the affection of the fans. The last day, when I went around the field, the fans sang just for me. These things you never forget,” said Antenucci.
The 32-year-old wasn’t given a new contract with Leeds United at the end of last season, which led to a number of Italian clubs fighting to get the player. The forward spent two seasons at Leeds United, and was the top scorer in his first year at the club
Since leaving Leeds United Antenucci has been key for SPAL, and could soon realise his dream of playing in Serie A.
