Snapped up by Celtic on a free when his contract with Fulham expired, Moussa Dembele has been everything Brendan Rodgers hoped for, and more.
Just six months after his arrival, the young French striker was already being linked with a move away from Celtic Park, with rather ridiculous claims that Chelsea were prepared to spend £40m on him last January.
Of course, that transfer never materialised, and the 21-year-old is currently enjoying a positive second season, scoring six goals and picking up three assists in 13 appearances, and is set to face his former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, having missed the chance to do so in September through injury.
This return to the Parc des Princes will be a chance for the Celtic star to see some former teammates from the Ligue 1 leaders’ youth sides, like their goalkeeper Alphonse Aréola, who stated he was keeping an eye on Dembele’s progress in a press conference on Tuesday.
He said: “We’re following him very closely. I know him from the academy, even if I’m a bit older. He’s doing great things. He’s got quality. We’re very happy when a young guy from Paris does well.”
Having recently signed Kylian Mbappé from Monaco, there is little need for Paris Saint-Germain to make a move for Moussa Dembele anytime soon, but it’s worth noting that someone at his former club is taking notice, and could, eventually, whisper it in a manager’s ear.
The comments about the Celtic player are ambiguous and could either be taken as a soft hint at transfer interest, or that PSG are worried about Dembele ahead of the match.
