Former Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has revealed he had no relationship with the club’s owner Mike Ashley during his spell at St James Park.

McClaren spent just ten months in charge of the club during the 2015/16 season.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, McClaren was asked what it was like working with Ashley during his time as the Newcastle United boss: “I had a 20 minute chat with Mike before the first match of the season, and then a second conversation wishing a happy New Year. Those are the only times we spoke. I had no relationship with the owner of Newcastle owner.”

However, his time in the North East didn’t go to plan, and it took his side eight games to win their first game under his management.

The former England manager didn’t see out the season with Newcastle United, and was eventually sacked in March 2016, with the club in a relegation battle.

Newcastle United ended up being relegated that season after finishing 18th in the table.
