Following Sevilla’s Europa League defeat to West Ham, and their subsequent elimination from the competition, Anthony Martial started to receive criticism in the club’s local media.
It was thought that the Manchester United owned player had not shown up during the tie, and that was disappointing given he has a good record of scoring against West Ham. His contribution wasn’t anything like what had been hoped for against David Moyes’ side, and the backlash began.
Sevilla had devoted so much hype to the Frenchman’s January arrival that perhaps the club hold some blame. The 26-year-old had scored just one goal for Manchester United in the first half of the season, so it was a big ask for him to become a star for Sevilla quickly.
Things came to a head during Sevilla’s 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad on Sunday. Martial lasted an hour, and heard the whistles of the home support as he left the pitch, report Sport.
Fans of the Spanish club ‘expressed their displeasure with the performance of the French striker’, and it’s his ‘first warning’ since his move from Manchester United.
Martial is not ‘offering the expected performance’ and has not ‘justified’ his signing in January.
Sport do point out that there was a ‘small sector’ of fans who applauded him, so all isn’t lost. Indeed, there’s time for the situation to turn around, although the player will have to show more than he has so far.
For Manchester United, Martial having a poor loan isn’t great for their chances of a good fee if a sale is the decision this summer.
