Last year, the Champions League didn’t exactly go well for the one Belgian club in the competition.
Club Brugge picked a grand total of zero points from a possible 18, scoring just two goals and conceding 14, meaning all Anderlecht have to do this time around is pick up a point to better their predecessor’s efforts.
Considering their group includes Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, there’s a couple of games for them to do this, and they’re both against Celtic.
Welcoming Brendan Rodgers’ men on Wednesday night, Het Nieuwsblad believe Anderlecht will have extra motivation in the bonuses they would receive were they to pick up a win, or even a draw, against the Scottish Premiership champions.
According to the Belgian newspaper, every player is set to receive €40,000 for every Champions League victory, while walking away with a point would see €20,000 land in their bank account, which stems from the €12.7m the club received for making the competition’s group stages.
Whether this will actually help Nicolas Frutos’ men overcome Celtic remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, and that’s Brendan Rodgers making it as difficult for them as possible, even if they are away from Celtic Park.
Much like Anderlecht, these fixtures are the Bhoys’ best chance of picking up points, even if you wouldn’t past them to get an upset somewhere else.
If they can’t get out of the group, there’s always the Europa League to aim for.
