After being relegated to Italy’s U21s because of his lack of game time at Leeds United, there was hope Wilfried Gnonto could find some form during the international break.
That he did, as the young forward was able to score four goals in two games, including a last minute header to save a point against Ireland, meaning his country remain top of the U21 Euro 2025 qualifying group.
Corriere dello Sport go all out, calling the Leeds man ‘Super Gnonto’ thanks to his display, as they give him a 7.5/10 for his performance, which is also the highest out of everyone who was on the pitch.
His goal ‘at the last gasp’ caused elation for all Italians who were watching, as the draw is ‘worth gold’, allowing Italy to stay above their opponents in the rankings.
Carmine Nunziata, Italy U21’s manager, was more than happy to have the Leeds player at his disposal for this international period, and almost predicted what would happen.
He had said, relayed by FIGC: “Gnonto is an exceptional boy. For him, these two matches will be an opportunity.”
The Leeds striker knew that, and he has made the most of them, now set to return to Elland Road full of confidence, and perhaps will get a few more chances under Daniel Farke going forward.
