Around last October and November, Everton were regular watchers of Bordeaux. Scouts went to several Girondins matches and were clearly keeping a very close eye on somebody.
At the time Everton were repeatedly linked with a move for Henri Saivet, he was the man picked out as the likeliest one of interest. But he wasn’t the only player who could have been of interest.
In November, we covered Everton’s repeated scouting trips and said: ‘Everton are clearly interested in somebody at Bordeaux and another option could be 22 year old Uruguay international Diego Rolan.’
Everton had been scouting several clubs around Europe, and it appeared they were looking for a young and positionally flexible forward… Rolan ticked all the boxes.
Therefore, it’s very interesting that Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claimed on Monday that Everton were offering €15m to sign the player, with Bordeaux asking for €20m.
What would an Italian journalist know about a Uruguayan footballer playing in France joining an English club? Well, Rolan’s agent is Italian, which would suggest the information is well sourced there.
