Earlier on Wednesday, a number of reports in France emerged claiming that Rennes were on the verge of signing Arnaud Kalimuendo.
The young forward is set to move to Brittany from Paris Saint-Germain for around €25m, meaning Rennes now need to find a landing spot for Serhou Guirassy.
That’s where Everton come in, according to Le Parisien journalist Benjamin Quarez, who took to Twitter to reveal the news.
He explains the forward is ‘getting closer to the Premier League’, as ‘talks for a loan’ to Goodison Park are ‘advancing well and could conclude after the arrival of Kalimuendo’.
Despite a loss to Chelsea in the opening game of the season, there were some glimpses of good football from Everton, and the presence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin was sorely missed.

There was a feeling that an actual striker could have made the difference for the Toffees, and it’s clear more depth in the role is needed in Frank Lampard’s squad.
That’s what Guirassy would provide, as he scored 12 goals in 48 appearances last season for Rennes despite being anything but a regular starter.
He was a bit more prolific the year before that in a more important role, as he found the back of the net 14 times in 32 games.
There’s clearly something to work with here, but at this point, anyone who knows where the goal is will be welcome at Everton, hopefully in time to face Aston Villa at the weekend.
