For those who’ve never read about Everton’s interest in Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes, a story from newspaper Record today may sound like the Toffees are in the race for the player.
Following a report saying the 22-year-old is doing well in pre-season, the newspaper claims he’s a ‘target’ for Premier League clubs.
It’s recalled that the Toffees have the Brazilian ‘well referenced’ and already negotiated for him, even though it’s now pointed out that there are other league rivals who could go for his signing.
Now even though this is the picture shown by Record today, we better recall that it sounds like a step back in Everton’s pursuit for the signing.
The Toffees were previously said to be much closer to the transfer, at a time when it was reported that a fee of around €18m was being negotiated with Sporting.
At that time, Sport Witness pointed out that Gestifute were taking part in the negotiations, and the arrival of Nuno Espírito Santo to the Goodison Park would help the chances of a move. Since that never happened, it now looks like the pursuit went cold.
The report doesn’t even say which clubs would now fight Everton for the signing, and at this stage, it sounds much more like Nunes will end up staying with the Lions.
